In development
NEX: an AI companion that lives on your desktop.
A small rhino who walks around your screen, explains what you are stuck on, keeps the things you would otherwise forget, and talks the way your friends actually talk.
Lovable first. Useful second. Trusted always.
Most desktop assistants are either a cute pet with nothing behind it, or a capable tool with no warmth at all. NEX is being built to be both — a character with a face and a mood, carrying real work underneath.
- The horn and the badge
- They are status lights, not decoration. You can tell from across the room whether NEX is idle, listening, thinking — or capturing.
- The backpack
- Where NEX keeps your notes, tasks and reminders. What it is carrying is always something you can open and empty.
What it is being built to do
Explains what is on your screen
Select any part of the screen and ask what it means: an explanation, a hint rather than the answer, a translation, or the steps worked through.
Holds the small things
Notes, tasks and reminders in plain language — “remind me to finish Physics tomorrow at 8” — with reminders that still arrive when the internet does not.
Listens and talks back
Hold a key and speak instead of typing. Saying “stop” always interrupts, in the middle of anything.
Remembers only what you allow
You decide what NEX keeps. Everything it remembers sits on one page you can read, edit and delete.
Has a personality you choose
Professional, friendly or best-mate. How talkative NEX is, and whether it speaks first at all, are settings — not something you have to put up with.
Works with the AI tools you use
Designed to sit on top of the coding agents and AI apps people already run, showing what they are doing and asking you before they act.
A day, not a dashboard
The difference between an assistant and a companion is that a companion has a day alongside yours. NEX is designed to wake with you, notice when you have been still too long, and wind down when you should.
Morning
Wakes up when you do, and asks about breakfast before anything else.
Start of work
Helps you find the few things that actually matter today.
Mid-session
Notices you have not moved in an hour and a half, and says so.
Night
Yawns, tells you to go outside, and goes quiet during your quiet hours.
And it is designed to take the hint: dismiss the same nudge enough times and it moves, or stops asking.
It talks the way people here talk.
English, Nepali, and the mix of the two that most people actually use — with the festivals and the dates that matter in Nepal. You pick the tone; it reads the room and drops the jokes when you are not in the mood.
English · नेपाली · the mix of both
- Friendly
“Good morning! Water first?”
- Mate
“Morninggg mate. Khana khayau? Water first.”
- Friendly
“You’ve been at it for 90 minutes. Quick stretch?”
- Mate
“We’re done. Go outside bro.”
Something that lives on your desktop has to be trustworthy
It cannot watch your screen
Nothing is captured until you press the shortcut and choose an area, and NEX shows a light on its chest the whole time capture is happening.
Nothing leaves without a yes
Messages are drafted, never sent. Payments, passwords and one-time codes are never automated at all.
It is a companion, not a hook
No guilt, no streaks to protect, no “you haven’t talked to me in two days”. It is built to send you outside, not to keep you on the screen.
Where it stands: NEX is in development. The character is designed and the product is specified; the app is being built. Nothing on this page is available to download yet, and we are not taking money or sign-ups for it.
Join the build
We are looking for people to build NEX.
NEX is early, which is the interesting part: the character is designed and the product is specified, and almost everything else is still open. If you want your fingerprints on a product from the start rather than joining one that is already finished, this is that moment.
Desktop, in Rust and TypeScript
A transparent, always-on-top character window that has to feel weightless while it runs all day.
A character that has to feel alive
3D, animation and the state machine that turns a mood into a movement.
The part that thinks
Context, memory and tools — and the judgement about when to stay quiet.
Being straight about it: nothing about the arrangement is fixed yet — full time, part time, contract or a few evenings a week are all worth a conversation. Tell us what you would want to work on and we will tell you honestly where the project is.
Not a developer, but you know what NEX should do?
It is early enough that this still changes things. Tell us what you would want it to notice, remember or stop doing — ideas from people who would actually use it are worth more now than later.
Questions
Can I use NEX today?
No. NEX is in development and is not available to download. We are not taking money or sign-ups for it.
When will it be ready?
We do not have a date to share. We would rather say nothing than name a month and miss it.
What will it run on?
It is being built as a desktop app. Which systems it supports first will be announced when we are confident about it, not before.
What languages will it speak?
English, Nepali, and the natural mix of the two that people in Nepal actually speak day to day.
Will it read my screen in the background?
No. It is designed so that screen capture happens only when you press the shortcut and select an area, and so that capture is always visible while it happens.
Is it related to Gurubaa?
They are different things. Gurubaa is the AI tutor inside GyanMul and stays the place for deep tutoring; NEX is designed to hand over to it rather than replace it.
How will I hear when there is news?
Use the Notify me link on this page, or email info@nepfex.com. We will write to you when there is something real to show.
